Roli is best known for its flagship product, the Seaboard. That device is a futuristic-looking keyboard with a squishy, flat black surface in place of physical keys. The touch-sensitive surface responds to different gestures and can detect the amount of pressure behind each caress. By comparison, the Lumi is a more traditional keyboard, in that it has regular keys. There are only 24 of them—about a quarter of the keys you’ll find on a full-sized piano—but this limitation was intentional, as the Lumi is designed with portability in mind. Snap three or four Lumis together and you have something approaching, or even exceeding, the range of a full-sized keyboard. Oh yeah, and the keys light up. The goal of the Lumi is to help beginners associate musical notes with colors. Start in a Guitar Hero -esque mode, where, after loading the iOS app, you can choose a song to play along with.

During the festival, each performer will get to play a selection of their chosen pieces on the grand piano and see their music visualised through dazzling projections.
Each note played will trigger an animation onto the facade of Rushford Court on North Road, transforming the building and creating a living, moving artwork which responds to the tone, speed, volume and length of each song played. The other day, a musician-friend of mine was praising on Facebook a recent performance by Yo-Yo Ma. And this, my friend, is what pianists have to do for every concert! This brief exchange got me thinking about the fact that even my musician colleagues are unaware of the challenges that every other instrumentalist faces. Just like every other instrument, no two pianos are equal.
As performing musicians, I think we all have some responsibility to understand the deficiencies and challenges of every instrument, particularly if we plan to engage with other musicians in the pursuit of chamber music, or especially, if we have aspirations to be a conductor. Because pianos are pretty easy to stumble upon, many people have difficulty walking past one without playing a couple notes on it.
And why is that? Well, assuming that the piano has been cared for and recently tuned, with little effort, almost anyone over the age of 3 can produce an attractive tone on the piano. And from what I can tell, this is hardly the case with ANY other instrument. To use an extreme example, I should like to mention one of the most complex and beautiful instruments of all: the human voice. Though I love opera and art song, I never much enjoyed playing for voice lessons, because the entire hour was usually devoted to vocal technique and tone production, and the singer rarely got beyond bar 6 of the aria they were singing.
5 Reasons Why Playing The Piano Makes You Sexy
AMADEUS is Mozartian Competition for the Young Piano Players up to 11 Years of Age originated from the initiative of the Elementary School.
A player piano also known as pianola is a self-playing piano , containing a pneumatic or electro-mechanical mechanism that operates the piano action via programmed music recorded on perforated paper, or in rare instances, metallic rolls , with more modern implementations using MIDI. The rise of the player piano grew with the rise of the mass-produced piano for the home in the late 19th and early 20th century. The advent of electrical amplification in home music reproduction via radio in the same period helped cause their eventual decline in popularity, and the stock market crash of virtually wiped out production.
The idea of automatic musical devices can be traced back many centuries, and the use of pinned barrels to operate percussion mechanisms such as striking bells in a clock was perfected long before the invention of the piano. These devices were later extended to operate musical boxes , which contain a set of tuned metal teeth plucked by the player mechanism. An early musical instrument to be automated was the organ , which is comparatively easy to operate automatically.
The power for the notes is provided by air from a bellows system, and the organist or player device only has to operate a valve to control the available air. The playing task is ideally performed by a pinned barrel, and the art of barrel organs was well advanced by the midth century. The piano is a complex instrument, requiring each note to be struck with a different force to control the dynamics of the performance. The entire force required to sound the note must be given by the performer hitting the keys.
It proved to be difficult for a player device to combine a variable percussive force and a controlled note duration. Barrels do not provide a percussive force, but a relatively gentle switching motion. Early barrel pianos moved the hammer back and forwards continuously as the operator turned the handle, but the hammers did not strike the strings until moved slightly forwards by a pin in the barrel.
